CAPE User Group Week June 17-21
The annual CAPE Users’ Group Meeting Week includes the one-day protection seminar, two-day CAPE User Group Meeting, and two days of CAPE training. We promise an exceptional opportunity to expand your knowledge of system protection, learn the latest about CAPE, guide CAPE’s future development, and meet with colleagues from other companies and countries.
One online registration form covers all three events: the protection seminar, two-day Users’ Group Meeting, and the two training days.
The CAPE User Group Meeting brings together a wonderful group of protection engineering experts. The atmosphere is informal, interactive, and enjoyable. A sampling of UGM comments from recent years:
..."Very good technical presentations that encourage questions, discussion, and exchange of information."
..."Bring your questions and take advantage of the expertise of staff and users."
..."Very informative."
..."Real case studies are the best way to learn."
..."An excellent experience; I would encourage everyone to attend."
..."Well worth the time and money."
..."This is the best users group you could attend."
..."Change absolutely nothing."
..."Best conference I attend each year!"
..."It would be hard to improve."

Protection Seminar: Elmo Price, ABB, Inc.; A Primer on Line Distance Protection
9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, June 17; $395 by June 7 (includes full breakfast and lunch); ($450 after June 7)
Each year we offer a one-day professional seminar on a high-interest topic in system protection. This year our presenter is Elmo Price, ABB, Inc. Mr. Price has over 40 years of protection experience, working in relay product design, relay schools, and related technical responsibilities. Since 1988 he has held regional responsibility for product application for ABB's Protective Relay Division. In this seminar, Mr. Price will discuss his insights and experiences related to key concepts in protection engineering. See the seminar outline by clicking below.

CAPE Users Group Meeting
8:30 a.m – 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 18 - 19
$395 by June 7 (includes 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, and dinner on Tuesday evening) (After June 7, $450)
This two-day session is eligible for 1.5 continuing education units
We have been developing new features and tools that will let CAPE do more for you and will help you with more of the real-world problems you face daily. These are some of the topics we plan to present:
- The now-completed automated time-distance diagram feature
- Demonstration of the CAPE Application Programming Interface (API), now under development
- The CAPE TSLink: Validation and Documentation
- New, practical method for managing and summarizing voluminous output of a wide-area coordination review
- Development of a future Eastern Interconnect planning system with generic protection models for evaluating impact of heavy mix of renewable generation
- A function-driven interface to Relay Setting calculations
- Modeling generator impedance decay in Short Circuit and System Simulator
- Macro to support end-to-end testing
- 80 new relay models since last year’s user group meeting
In addition to presenting the work we have been doing, we have invited a few CAPE users to present their accomplishments; plus we always want to hear your ideas on how you would like to see CAPE develop in the future.
CAPE Training
CAPE training classes will be held on Thursday and Friday, June 20 - 21. This is a great way for current users to extend their CAPE skills and for new users to get the “big picture” quickly. You can sign up in half-day increments. Please bring your own laptop and, if you like, your own database. $390 / day ($195/half-day) by June 7; includes continental breakfast (am) and lunch (pm). Each full-day session is eligible for .75 continuing education units. (After June 7, $450/day or $225 per half-day)
Choose your topics when you register. Each topic is a half-day class except "CAPE for new users," which is a whole day. Don't worry about when your topic will be scheduled; just pick the topics you need. We will create a class schedule in early June, based on the classes requested.
- CAPE for new users (1 full day - covers Database Editor, Short Circuit, One-Line Diagram, and Coordination Graphics)
- Modeling detailed bus structures and open-ended lines with OL
- Using Coordination Graphics and its special displays
- System Simulator and Relay Checking including pilot protection
- Introduction to writing macros
- Introduction to ready-to-use Relay Setting algorithms
- Modeling transformers, neutral buses, neutral networks
- Breaker duty analysis
- Data compare, merge, and management techniques
- Modeling transmission lines with Line Constants
- Introduction to SQL and associated reporting
Accommodations
Most attendees stay at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest, which is connected to the conference center. To make your room reservations with the Marriott, call 800-228-9290 (U.S. and Canada) or 734-487-2000. We have reserved a block of rooms at a group rate.
